Set in the secluded world of 17th-century Japan, where its inhabitants rarely encountered anyone non-Japanese except through covert trade, Mizu (played by Erskine) knows that during her time, only four white men were present in Japan. Driven by a quest to find and eliminate these men, one of whom could be her father and the source of her being labeled a "creature of shame," Mizu embarks on a challenging journey. In a culture where vengeance is traditionally a man’s domain, she must skillfully conceal her gender and unique blue eyes. Mizu's journey is shared with Ringo (Masi Oka), a soba chef with grand aspirations; Taigen (Darren Barnet), a proud samurai whose initially adversarial relationship with Mizu evolves into a fragile partnership; and Princess Akemi (Brenda Song), Taigen’s fiancée, whose opulent life starkly contrasts with Mizu’s. This compelling series takes viewers through the landscapes of Edo-era Japan, masterfully combining mature animated storytelling with live-action sequences.
