The description of "Manifesto"—Cate Blanchett playing 13 wildly different characters, each of whom delivers a famous "manifesto"—sounds like an arch exercise in style, or, worse, a self-indulgent snoozefest, an opportunity for the sometimes showoff-y Blanchett to show off even more.

In one of the more memorable segments in “Manifesto,” Blanchett plays a boozy punker ranting about the creative impulse, and as she rises from her nightclub couch and takes to the stage to complete her thoughts, Rosefeldt’s camera moves smoothly and dynamically around her, capturing a performance that grows from sleepy to fierce. At that point, it almost doesn’t matter what the character’s saying. Regardless, she’s thrilling to watch.

Strident art-school polemics make their way to the multiplex in the unwieldy cinematic hybrid Manifesto. I know what you’re thinking: Finally!
2986d ago
Manifesto is obviously a talk-heavy movie, and the bleeding together of so many different philosophies threatens to erode the potency of the words all these smart people wrote.
2986d ago
The film’s visceral pleasures often work at cross purposes with the cerebral message of the manifestos.
