Audiences unfamiliar with Herzog will be largely baffled by this eccentric and meandering eco-drama, but aficionados will find much to enjoy here.

The final image is naturally of a machine increasingly dwarfed by landscape. Though, overall, Salt and Fire may feel like a joke of sorts, it’s one attuned enough to a genuinely idiosyncratic sensibility to still register enough as a genuine search for something new.

A lot about “Salt and Fire” seems almost designed to provoke eye-rolls, right down to Herzog’s strange antipathy for statistics and “scientific instruments” as a way of mapping our environmental doom. But his imagery of the salt flats is haunting, and the conversations between Riley and Somefeld are genuinely enlightening, however clumsily the lines within them are spoken.

In Salt and Fire, a bad movie but an intriguing vacation slideshow, Michael Shannon and Veronica Ferres play “characters” (unconvincing, undimensional) and speak “dialogue” (expository, flat).

There’s no nuance to be found in Herzog’s film about an abducted scientist forced to fend for herself in an alien landscape. Still, the film-maker’s tale telling has its weird appeal.

Werner Herzog's latest half-hearted return to narrative cinema is more excited by its stunning landscape than the life inside it.

It’s clear that the film’s aimless yet weirdly un-pretentious one-thing-after-another-ness is intentionally achieved.

Early in Werner Herzog’s Salt and Fire, Laura (Veronica Ferres), a scientist kidnapped by mercenaries in South America, is warned by a fellow prisoner to keep their captors talking if she wants to survive.

Veronica Ferres and Gael Garcia Bernal are scientists abducted by visionary businessman Michael Shannon in Werner Herzog’s exotic eco-thriller.
